Istanbul 2005

“That night in Istanbul.” Words you’ll hear come out of every Liverpool fan’s mouth at some point in time. A magical night that showcased what not only soccer, but sport is truly about.

Liverpool was facing off against AC Milan. It was truly a clash of David vs. Goliath. AC Milan had a starting line that any soccer fan from the 2000s will recognize every single name of. Dida was on goal with a back line of Cafu, Jaap Stam, Alessandro Nesta, captain Paolo Maldini sheltering him. The immortal Andrea Pirlo anchored the midfield, with Gennaro Gattuso on the right and Clarence Seedorf on the left. The exceptionally talented Kaká played at the head of the midfield right behind Ukrainian star Andriy Shevchenko and Hernán Crespo.

Liverpool on the other hand went with a starting lineup that included Harry Kewell. The less said about that the better.

Liverpool went behind early due to a goal from Maldini, and went into half time down 3-0 due to a 5 minute brace from Crespo. Facing a seemingly insurmountable lead against one of the best teams of all time, Liverpool was beaten.

That was not the case.

I could try to do it justice, but the comeback is better watched than told.
